Surface Between
By Jenny Andrews
Jenny’s practice explores the connections and poetic links between art and architecture. She is interested in architectural forms and materials, the utility of the building, its cultural and structural history and its environment. Using sculpture and projection, her work documents cities and spaces, the people who inhabit them and how they exist as a link between the present and the past.
As Jenny’s first solo exhibition at Old Northam Road, Surface Between was a site-specific hanging installation consisting of various handmade fused and slumped glass elements. For this new body of work, Jenny was inspired by The Poetics of Space by French Philosopher Gaston Bachelard (1885 – 1962), in which he describes the window as a “transitional object” from interior to exterior, a place to communicate with the outside. The window becomes a border-line surface between the here and the beyond. Surface Between explores the poetics between the materiality of glass, and light and space within architecture.
Surface Between was on display in the windows of the Hidden Wardrobe from Friday 13th January – Sunday 19th February 2023.
