In Between is an upcoming exhibition by MA Fine Art students from Winchester School of Art.
The Alfred Arcade, once a bustling shopping arcade that was later severed by urban planning, has been revitalised as an art space that carries change, rupture and reinvention. It is against this backdrop that the exhibition “In Between” unfolds, exploring the fluidity of identity, memory and reality.
In In Between, eight artists write about this fluidity in their own ways: Jolene Brown’s digitised images blur in the erosion of time, just as Luhan Yang searches for the fissures of herself in the rupture and restructuring of her family’s relationships; Deborah Porter’s fluid brushstrokes depict the fissures of the self, and the fissures of the mind, the mind and the body. Deborah Porter’s fluid brushwork depicting the movement of the female body echoes Yuxin Teng’s exploration of the intersection of identity and materiality – a rhizome-like connection that allows the individual to take root and grow between history and the present. Feyisola Adeyemi picks up forgotten histories from discarded clothing. The texture of fibers carries the marks of colonisation and witnesses the changes of the times. Shangyu Song embeds oracle bones into the texture of contemporary culture, language is shifted in time and space, and meaning grows in misinterpretation, just as Ian Golding inquiries about the shaping and disintegration of masculinity during images and objects. Han Yu gazes at the moon, mirroring its flow to the beauty of femininity, which is free to grow and grow without changing its form due to the gaze.
The revival of the Alfred Arcade echoes the core of the exhibition: we are always between boundaries, searching for meaning in the unfinished. In Between is an unclosed door, waiting to be crossed and redefined. Reality is constantly morphing, and the narrative is unfinished – we will eventually find our place or keep walking.
