Anya draws on historical references to create intricately detailed, expressive ceramic sculptures that are both beautiful and grotesque. Women’s heads are adorned with excessive jewellery, crudely applied cosmetics, rotting teeth and draped textiles. Their stories reveal absurd, fantastical truths about by-gone eras.
“I enjoy playing in the in-between – embracing the absurdity that comes forth when merging the antique with contemporary, giving the sculptures a raw quality that makes historical references feel immediate and alive.”
