Ultra-processed
Rosie James
Rosie’s practice explores the blurred boundaries between digital and physical manipulation of the female body. She creates fake products and advertisements that expose the ludicrous and unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by cosmetics companies and influencers on social media, using filmmaking as a way to reveal her processes.
Ultra-processed illustrates the relationship between the body and its pixelated form, representing the presentation of bodies within the advertising industry and social media. I created this body of work through extensive processing and re-processing to mimic the planning and editing that an image of the body goes through before an audience can see it, resulting in imagery that blurs the dichotomy between beauty and the abject. After printing, scanning, manipulating, editing, plumping, saturating. painting, and re-painting,. this work is presented in a human(ish) size textile print, bringing the digital depiction back into physical space.
Ultra-processed will be on display in the windows of the Hidden Wardrobe from Friday 14th February until Sunday 23rd March 2025 and will be free to visit.
