Untitled 2 (Grinder)

by Robin Price

Robin is interested in space and volume; his practice explores different ways of measuring space beyond a numerical value. He builds simple, geometric sculptures and installations, working with ordinary materials such as string, paper, plaster, wood and wire.

“After the success of our latest virtual exhibition, Homemade Mango Chutney and exploring how I could make artwork in the digital realm, I have created over a 100 folded cubes in an attempt to measure the physical space in the windows of the Hidden Wardrobe. Each cube is made up of 12 individual folded units, each unit slots together to create one cube. For me the repetitive process of folding over 1200 sheets of paper distracts from the wider chaos that is happening around the world. The work isn’t just about experimenting with the idea of measuring spatial quantities, it’s also a measure of my time through lockdown. The other window contains a café-style coffee grinder that I have taken apart and suspended within the space. These two separate works play against each other – the grinder portraying the inner density of an object in exploded view and the cubes being uniform in design to mark out the space.”
