In Between

Winchester School of Art MA Fine Art Students

In Between was an exhibition by MA Fine Art students from Winchester School of Art.

The Alfred Arcade, once a bustling shopping arcade that was later severed by urban planning, has been revitalised as an art space that carries change, rupture and reinvention. It is against this backdrop that the exhibition “In Between” unfolded, exploring the fluidity of identity, memory and reality.

In In Between, eight artists wrote about this fluidity in their own ways: Jolene Brown’s digitised images blurred in the erosion of time, just as Luhan Yang searched for the fissures of herself in the rupture and restructuring of her family’s relationships; Deborah Porter’s fluid brushstrokes depicted the fissures of the self, and the fissures of the mind,  and the body. Deborah Porter’s fluid brushwork depicting the movement of the female body echoed Yuxin Teng’s exploration of the intersection of identity and materiality – a rhizome-like connection that allowed the individual to take root and grow between history and the present. Feyisola Adeyemi picked up forgotten histories from discarded clothing. The texture of fibers carried the marks of colonisation and witnesses the changes of the times. Shangyu Song embeded oracle bones into the texture of contemporary culture, language is shifted in time and space, and meaning grows in misinterpretation, just as Ian Golding inquired about the shaping and disintegration of masculinity during images and objects. Han Yu gazed at the moon, mirroring its flow to the beauty of femininity, which is free to grow and grow without changing its form due to the gaze.

The revival of the Alfred Arcade echoed the core of the exhibition: we are always between boundaries, searching for meaning in the unfinished. In Between was an unclosed door, waiting to be crossed and redefined. Reality is constantly morphing, and the narrative is unfinished – we will eventually find our place or keep walking.
