The Alfred Arcade

The Alfred Arcade is the main hub of the RIPE programme. An old shopping arcade, it was renovated and first used in 2018 for the exhibition Ripe Bananas #01.

It has six exhibition/studio spaces, an office, two toilets and a terrace at the back which overlooks the railway.

Accessibility:

Physical access

There is step free access to The Alfred Arcade via a ramp.

Once inside the building there are additional doors to get into the exhibition spaces. These doors can be too narrow for some wheelchairs and so can limit access. There are windows into each of the rooms so the art can be viewed from the central corridor.

For launch events, there is seating that is available throughout the event. When open to the public for artist led tours or other visits, seating can be provided on request.

There is a small outside area located at the back of the venue, this unfortunately doesn’t have step free access.

Communication access

Due to the location of the venue being next to the railway, there are occasionally loud train noises.

The exhibitions held here have been previously recorded and uploaded to our youtube channel. These contain the voice overs from each of the artists, explaining their work and overall practice.

Depending on the exhibiting artists, some art work may contain flashing lights and/or loud noises.

For launch events, there may be a DJ or live music.

Toilets

There are two toilets located inside, unfortunately there are no accessible toilets.

Assistance dogs

All dogs are welcome at The Alfred Arcade, including guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs.
